How to get dog grooming clients to rebook

Updated 1 October 2026

Most grooming businesses run on regulars. A client who comes every six weeks is worth far more over a year than a one-off, but only if they keep coming back on time. When rebooking slips, the diary gets patchy and coats get matted.

Book the next groom before they leave

The easiest rebook is the one made at collection. Suggest a date based on the dog’s coat and the client’s routine, and put it in the diary there and then. If they’re not sure of their plans, pencil it in and confirm it nearer the time.

Know each dog’s usual interval

A doodle on a short clip and a terrier being hand-stripped have very different cycles. Note the interval that suits each dog, and use it to work out when they’re due. That turns “I should ring a few people” into a list of exactly who to contact this week.

Nudge clients who are due, not everyone

A short, personal message to a client whose dog is due works better than a general offer to your whole list. Mention the dog by name, say when they were last in, and offer a couple of times.

  • Message clients in the week they’re due, before they’re overdue.
  • Send it from your business, in your own words.
  • Follow up once if there’s no reply, then leave it.

Make booking easy

If rebooking means a phone call during your working hours, plenty of people will put it off. An online booking page that only shows real free times lets clients book at 10pm when they remember.

Win back clients who have drifted

Some clients will lapse. A friendly message after a few months, asking how the dog is and offering a time, brings a good share of them back. Only send marketing messages to people who agreed to hear from you.

Questions

How often should a dog be groomed?

It depends on the breed, coat and style. Many clipped and curly-coated dogs are groomed every four to eight weeks; some short-coated dogs need far less. Agree an interval with each owner and note it on the dog’s record.

Is it OK to text clients reminding them to rebook?

A message about a dog’s next groom to an existing client is generally fine. For promotions and offers you need their agreement to marketing first. This isn’t legal advice.
